Meet Our Motley Crew

At The Grumpy Goat Farm & Sanctuary, every resident has a story — some arrived after long journeys, others by sheer luck and kindness. From our galloping giants to our mini mischief-makers, each one has found a forever home here in Nokesville, Virginia.

Horses at Our Sanctuary

ApachePaint Gelding, 23

Apache is a steady soul with the gentlest heart. Though he never had a riding career, he’s perfected the art of being a loyal friend — to both people and horses. Easy to handle and always happy outdoors, Apache is the kind of horse who makes life feel calm just by being near.

Apache & Diego

Apache and Diego are true pasture partners, content with the little things as long as they’re side by side. Apache is the steady soul, Diego the graceful one, and together they remind us that friendship is the best kind of forever.

DiegoPolish Arabian, 26

Diego may have started life with the name Diablo, but it just didn’t suit him — there’s nothing fiery about this gentle soul. Quiet, sweet, and almost princess-like in his grace, he’s happiest sharing the pasture with Apache and soaking up simple joys — sunshine, good hay, and companionship.

RavenThoroughbred, 11

Raven is our gentle giant with a heart as big as his stride. An old racetrack injury slowed him down years ago, but it never dimmed his sweet spirit. He does have kissing spine and arthritis, but he seems to be doing ok. These days he’s happiest strolling along at a walk, enjoying the quiet life and the company of his best buddy, Ollie.

Raven & Ollie

Raven and Ollie are best friends through and through. Raven brings quiet resilience, Ollie brings gentle calm, and together they’re never far from each other’s side.

OllieThoroughbred, late 20s

Ollie is the very definition of a gentleman — calm, kind, and endlessly patient. Even in his late 20s, he hasn’t lost his steady presence or warm personality. Recently diagnosed with PPID, he takes daily medication (and a few extra treats, of course), but it doesn’t slow him down. Whether quietly grazing by Raven’s side or simply enjoying the pasture, Ollie brings a sense of peace wherever he goes. He is a bit naughty in his older age, cue, opening gates and flipping buckets.

JettArabian Mix, teens

Jett was pulled from an auction out West with the assist of an Arabian horse rescue. Likely more mix than Arabian, she arrived underweight and a little rough around the edges. With good care and plenty of groceries, she’s now healthy, filled out, and feeling herself again. Full of spice and confidence, Jett has the kind of sass that only comes from finally being comfortable in her own skin.

TuckerGypsy Vanner/Draft Mix, 1½ years

Tucker may not be a rescue, but he’s every bit a part of the farm family. Short, stalky, and full of charm (a guy after our own heart), this youngster is calm, curious, and downright funny — like having a toddler in the pasture. Whether he’s exploring, clowning around, or keeping the older horses on their toes, Tucker brings a playful spark that makes every day brighter.

CodyTWH/Standardbred/Saddlebred Mix, 4

Cody came to us at just 3 years old after his owner feared he would have to be euthanized if a safe home wasn’t found quickly. Pushed too hard too young, he developed juvenile arthritis in his spine and will never be rideable — but that hasn’t slowed him down from being the sweetest shadow. Now thriving pain-free, Cody adores people, loves being wherever you are, and is clever enough to open gates or even turn on the water spigots when the mood strikes.

Grace – Appaloosa, Special Needs

Grace came to us from a difficult situation — a blind horse unsure of the world around her. She arrived nervous, easily startled, and unsure of even the simplest interactions, which told us she had not experienced much gentle handling or support in her past.

Because of her blindness and fear, Grace wasn’t the easiest horse to place. She needed a calm, consistent environment and someone experienced in helping horses feel secure again. Thankfully, we found the perfect partner to help her navigate the world around her.

Over time, Grace began to settle into sanctuary life. She learned to trust, to listen, and to move through the pasture with a little more confidence each day.

Grace lived surrounded by thoughtful support and the steady routines that helped her feel safe.

In early 2026, after a bad injury and with careful consultation with our veterinary team, we made the hard but compassionate decision to let Grace go peacefully.

Her story is a reminder of why sanctuary matters — providing safety, comfort, and a steady environment when animals need it most.

Ponies & Minis

Rusty – Mini, Senior

Rusty was our very first horse rescue, the one who started it all. He came to us as a senior in heartbreaking condition — emaciated and covered in lice. With time, care, and kindness, he transformed into the sweet, fluffy old man we know today. Recently diagnosed with PPID, Rusty continues to take everything in stride. As our first save, he’ll forever hold an irreplaceable place in our hearts.

Melody – Mini, Senior

Melody joined us so she could stay with her best friend, Rusty. She came from a caring home and had spent several years living a quiet, well-loved life at the same boarding barn where Rusty stayed while our farm was coming together. After arriving here, we noticed Melody has very limited vision — so Rusty happily continues his role as her dependable sidekick. Together, they’ve settled in perfectly.

Rusty & Melody

Rusty and Melody may have only shared a couple of years before coming to the farm, but you’d never know it — they’re two old souls who act like lifelong friends. Now together forever, Rusty is especially lucky to have Melody by his side, and the farm feels all the more complete with their bond.

Sparky – Mini, Teens

Sparky — short for Sparticus — may be the smallest of our equines, but he’s got the best hair on the farm. (Honestly, we should have named him Fabio.) His robust name is a funny contrast to his extra-short legs, but that just makes him more lovable. A bit on the shy side, Sparky keeps most people at a distance — except our 10-year-old, who, for reasons only Sparky knows, is the one person he’ll happily let catch him.

Indie - Paint , Late Teens

Indie looks like he was made for the open plains — a horse’s body on pony legs, with paint markings to match. His past was clearly a hard one, and he carries it in the way he stays just out of reach. But his curiosity always wins out, especially if there are treats involved. Indie may keep his distance, but he’s a funny, endearing little soul who reminds us that trust takes time — and is always worth it.

Annie – Mini, Senior

Annie is our calm and gentle old gal from Virginia. She came to us when her owner could no longer keep up with her care, and now spends her days soaking up all the attention she can get. With insulin resistance and tricky feet that need regular farrier work and supplements, she’s a bit high-maintenance on paper — but you’d never know it from her patient, easygoing nature. Whether it’s brushing, braids, or just quiet company, Annie will happily stand and enjoy every minute.

Cash – Palomino Pony, 2 ½ Years

Cash — short for Cashew — came to us as a yearling from a feed lot auction out west, battling a terrible eye injury. With care and time, he pulled through and now sees the world just fine through one eye. Don’t let his size fool you — this palomino pony is pure personality: spunky, curious, and full of trouble. He’s not always easy to catch, but he never says no to a treat or a good run with his friends.

Donkeys

The Three Amigos

They may not be rescues, but the farm wouldn’t be the same without our three miniature donkeys. Affectionately known as The Three Amigos, these trouble-makers and harmonic hee-haw-ers keep the barnyard lively with their big personalities in small packages. Whether braying for snacks, plotting mischief, or just sticking close together, they’re constant reminders that joy comes in all sizes.

Goats

Oreo, Willy & S’mores

Our goat crew is made up of two goofy brothers, Oreo and Willy, plus their partner-in-crime, S’mores. Whether they’re climbing, exploring, or sneaking snacks, these three always keep life interesting. Sweet, curious, and just a little mischievous, they bring plenty of laughs (and a bit of chaos) to the farm.

Pigs

Ginger & Gilly – Kunekune Mix

Ginger and Gilly were the runts of their litter, hand-fed after struggling to eat on their own. Originally destined for the dinner table, fate had other plans — Sweet as can be and more like puppies than pigs, this brother-sister pair adore belly rubs, attention, and treats. Watermelon? Their absolute favorite.

Truffle – Kunekune

Truffle’s first home wasn’t the right fit for a pig, and her love of escaping soon led to serious trouble — even threats from a neighbor who wanted her gone. Thankfully, she found her way to us, where she finally has the space, safety, and care she deserves. With room to roam and plenty of treats, Truffle’s days of worry are behind her.
